Abstract: Objective To explore the mediating effect of perceived social support on the relationship between character strengths and professional identity among nursing interns based on person-environment fit theory and trait activation theory. Methods A total of 511 nursing interns from 4 grade-A tertiary hospitals in Jiangsu Province were recruited into this study by convenient sampling method and were surveyed by using general information questionnaire,three-dimensional inventory of character strengths, perceived social support scale, and professional identity scalefor nurse students. SPSS 24.0 was used for descriptive statistics and pearson correlation analysis,PROCESS 3.5 was used to test the mediating effect of the data. Results The total scores of character strengths, social support and professional identity of nursing interns were (3.75±0.57),(5.35±0.93) and (3.76±0.69)points,respectively. Correlation analysis showed that character strengths was positively correlated with the total score of professional identity and all dimensions(r=0.133-0.293,all P<0.01),there was a significant positive correlation between character strengths and perceived social support scores(r=0.197-0.321,all P<0.01),and there was a significant positive correlation between social support and professional identity(r=0.259-0.658,all P<0.01).The mediating effect test showed that after controlling the influence of highest education level, major decisionand future employment intention, the nursing interns' character strengths had a significant direct prediction effect on professional identity(β=0.120,P<0.01). Perceived social support played a partial mediating role in the relationship between character strengths and professional identity(effect value=0.147,95%CI:0.101-0.198),and the mediating effect accounted for 55.06% of the total effect. Conclusion The professional identity score of nursing interns was above the average level. The character strengths of nursing interns can not only directly affect the professional identity, but also indirectly affect the professional identity by the mediating role of perceived social support. To help nursing interns recognize and utilize character strengths, apply various designs to improve the perception of social support for nursing interns, and improve the professional identity through internal and external motivation,so as to stabilize the nursing team.
