Status of workplace bullying among nurses in China:A meta-analysis

Abstract: Objective To systematically evaluate the status of workplace bullying among nurses in China. Methods The cross-sectional studies on workplace bullying of nurses in China were collected by searching PubMed,Cochrane,Web of Science,EMbase,PsycINFO,CNKI,CBM,Wanfang and VIP databases from the establishment of the database to March 2022.Two researchers independently screened literatures,extracted data,and evaluated the bias risk of the included studies. Meta-analysis was performed using StataSE 16.0 software. Results Totally 36 cross-sectional studies were included with a total sample size of 19 343.Meta-analysis results showed that the incidence of workplace bullying among nurses in China was 53%(95%CI:41%-65%),and the workplace bullying score was 36.00(95%CI:26.55-45.45)points. The results of subgroup analysis showed that the incidence of workplace bullying among nurses was 16%(95%CI:12%-19%) in northeast China,62%(95%CI:45%-79%) in East China,40%(95%CI:36%-43%) in North China,54%(95%CI:42%-65%) in Central China. 60%(95%CI:38%-82%) in South China,13%(95%CI:7%-19%) in southwest China,48%(95%CI:24%-71%) in northwest China. The nurses who are male,30-39 years old,married,highly educated,low professional title,contractbased employment,and in emergency department rated higher incidence of workplace bullying. Conclusions The existing evidence indicates that the incidence of workplace bullying among nurses in China is high,and there are differences among different regions.The workplace bullying of nurses is affected by gender,age,educational level,professional title,nature of employment and department.
