Mediating effect of occupational delayed gratification on empathy and occupational benefits of nurses in military hospitals

Abstract: Objective To explore the mediating effect of occupational delayed gratification on the relationship between empathy and the occupational benefits of nurses in military hospitals. Methods From May to July 2019,365 nurses in a grade-A tertiary military hospital in Xi'an City were investigated by the occupational delayed gratification scale,nurses' occupational sense of benefit scale,and empathy scale,and the data were analyzed. Results The total scores for nurses' empathy,occupational delayed gratification and occupational benefits were (104.53±15.2),(23.55±3.05) and (134.80±18.09)points,respectively. The empathy and occupational delayed gratification was positively related to the occupational benefits(r=0.492,0.392,both P<0.0l). The occupational delayed gratification played a part of intermediary effect on the relation between empathy and occupational benefits(β=0.265,P<0.01). Conclusion The empathy affects military nurses' sense of occupational benefits not only directly but also indirectly through occupational delayed gratification,so it is necessary to improve nurses' empathy and professional delay satisfaction through various interventions in clinic,thereby enhancing nurses' sense of professional benefit.
