Abstract: Objective To understand the status quo of nurses' empathy ability and humanistic care quality, and explore the correlation between them. Methods Using the convenient sampling method,601 nurses from 12 public hospitals in five cities of Gansu Province were investigated by using the general information questionnaire, the Chinese version of Jefferson empathy scale and the nurses' humanistic care quality scale from February to May 2022,and the data were analyzed. Results A total of 573 qualified questionnaires were collected. The overall average score of the empathy scale was (107.10±19.26)points,and the average score of items was (5.36±0.96)points,with an average score rate of 76.14%. The total average score of humanistic care quality scale was (118.60±17.60)points,and the average score of items was (4.09±0.61)points,with an average score rate of 81.85%. The multivariate linear regression analysis showed that hospital grade, parents' attitude towards the nurse's occupation and job satisfaction were the main influencing factors of nurses' empathy ability, while marital status, hospital grade and parents' attitude towards the nurse's occupation were the main influencing factors of nurses' humanistic care quality(all P<0.05). Pearson correlation analysis showed that nurses' empathy ability was positively correlated with the quality of humanistic care(r=0.682,P<0.01). Conclusions The empathy ability and humanistic care quality of nurses in Gansu Province is at medium and good levels respectively, and there is a close relationship between empathy ability and humanistic care quality. The nursing managers should integrate empathy courses into the quality training of humanistic care,so as to promote nurses' empathy ability and humanistic care quality.
