Analysis of the current situation and influencing factors of alexithymia in medical students

Abstract: Objective To understand the status quo and influencing factors of alexithymia among medical students in Wuhu City,Anhui Province,and to provide reference for prevention and control of alexithymia among medical students. Methods From January to February 2024,totally 741 undergraduate medical students were selected from a medical college in Wuhu City,Anhui Province by convenient sampling method.The questionnaire tests of Toronto alexithymia scale,stress perception and core self-assessment scale were conducted,and the data were analyzed. Results The total score of alexithymia,stress perception and core self-evaluation of 741 medical students were (56.33±8.16),(39.06±6.72) and (30.06±2.68)points,respectively. The score of alexithymia was positively correlated with perceived stress(P<0.01),and negatively correlated with core self-evaluation(P<0.01). Gender,place of origin,whether the only child,perceived pressure and core self-evaluation were the influencing factors of alexithymia among medical students(all P<0.05). Conclusion The general alexithymia of medical students in Wuhu City,Anhui Province is at a critical level,and the stress perception has a positive predictive effect on alexithymia,the core self-evaluation has a negative predictive effect on alexithymia. Schools and families should pay attention to improving the level of core self-evaluation and reducing the level of stress perception,which can effectively prevent the occurrence and development of alexithymia in medical students.
