Investigation on knowledge,attitudes and practices of drinking water among residents of Tianjin

Abstract: Objective To understand the knowledge,attitudes and behaviors related to drinking water and the needs of Tianjin residents,and provide scientific basis for formulating more effective drinking water health education strategy. Methods The convenience sampling method was used to recruit permanent residents aged ≥6 years old in Tianjin to participate the online questionnaire survey,and the data were analyzed. Results A total of 36 790 questionnaires were collected,31 450 valid questionnaires were obtained and the effective rate reached 85.49%. The overall awareness rate of knowledge related to drinking water was 83.31%. The awareness rates of the purpose of drinking water disinfection,the correct way of drinking water,the harm of drinking unclean water,the sugary drinks were no substitute for water and the harm of insufficient drinking water were 85.01%,65.76%,77.87%,97.77% and 90.12%,respectively. 67.17%,60.21 and 89.28% of respondents agreed that ladder water price was helpful to improve residents' water-saving consciousness,poor water-saving concept and concern about drinking water knowledge,respectively. 94.36% of respondents took plain boiled water as main water source. 41.45% of respondents had average weekly consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages less than 500 mL. 84.67% of the respondents who used water purification equipment used it correctly according to the instructions. 72.87% of the respondents acquired knowledge about drinking water via television public service advertisement. Conclusion The drinking water health knowledge of Tianjin residents is insufficient and there are incorrect drinking water health behaviors. In order to guide the residents to drink water scientifically and healthily,it is necessary to strengthen the propaganda and education of drinking water health and develop targeted educational strategies.
