Abstract: Objective To investigate the status quo of perceived professional benefits, spiritual care perceptions and spiritual care competency of nurses in five grade-A tertiary hospitals in China, explore the mediating effect of spiritual care perceptions on perceived professional benefits and spiritual care competency in nurses. Methods From February to March 2021,a total of 361 in-service nurses from five grade-A tertiary hospitals in China(three hospitals in Sichuan Province, one hospital in Hebei Province and one hospital in Liaoning Province) were collected by the convenience sampling method, and investigated by the general information questionnaire, perceived professional benefits questionnaire, the spiritual care-giving scale(SCGS) and the spiritual care competency scale(SCCS),and the data were analyzed. Results The scores of perceived professional benefits, spiritual care perceptions and spiritual care competency of nurses in five grade-A tertiary hospitals in China were (120.43±17.38),(169.85±29.41) and (99.72±21.15)points,respectively. There were statistically significant differences in the scores of spiritual care competency among nurses with different professional titles and receiving different spiritual training ways(all P<0.05).There were positive correlations between perceived professional benefits, spiritual care perceptions and spiritual care competency(r=0.394,0.388,0.520,all P<0.01). The spiritual care perceptions of nursesplayed a partial mediating role between perceived professional benefits and spiritual care competency, and the mediating effect accounted for 44.10% of the total effect. Conclusions The perceived professional benefits of nurses in five grade-A tertiary hospitals in Chinacan not only directly affect the spiritual care competency, but also indirectly affect the spiritual care competency through spiritual care perceptions. It is suggested that nursing managers should take active intervention measures to improve nurses'perceived professional benefits and perceptions level of spiritual care,so as to improve nurses' spiritual care competency.
