Abstract: Objective To understand the current status and influencing factors of infectious disease prevention and control, disinfection and infection control skills among staff in elderly care institutions in the urban area of Shanghai,in order to provide a basis for the development of relevant policies. Methods From March to April 2023,a questionnaire survey was conducted to gather general information and relevant data on infectious disease prevention and control,as well as the need and attitudes to disinfection and infection control skills, among 536 staff members from 40 elderly care institutions in Huangpu District of Shanghai, and the data were analyzed. Results The proficiency rate of infectious disease prevention skills among staff in elderly care institutions was 55.2%,while the proficiency rate of disinfection and isolation skills was 68.3%,and the proficiency rate of personal protective skills was 23.5%. There were statistically significant differences in the mastery of infectious disease prevention skills among workers based on various factors, including gender, job types, certification status, and work attitudes(all P<0.05). There were statistically significant differences in the mastery of disinfection and isolation skills among workers based on various factors such as age,job types, duration of work in the current position, monthly income, job satisfaction, certified personnel, and work attitudes(all P<0.05). There were statistically significant differences in the mastery of personal protective skills among workers in various types of elderly care institution, educational levels, job types, and certified personnel(all P<0.05). The high monthly income, high satisfaction, positive attitudes were independent protective factors that influence staff members' proficiency in mastering disinfection and infection control isolation skills. The nature of the institution(publicly funded and operated) and certified personnel were independent protective factors that influence staff members' proficiency in personal protective skills. Conclusions The staff in elderly care institutions in urban area of Shanghai have relatively low infectious disease prevention and control, disinfection, and infection control skills, which directly impacts the implementation of hygiene and disinfection work in these institutions. Therefore, early development of operational and replicable hygiene standards for elderly care institutions, joint guidance and supervision by multiple departments, can effectively prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases in elderly care institutions.
