Analysis on influencing factors of work engagement in nurses from three hospitals in Zhengzhou City based on self-determination theory

Abstract: Objective To investigate the impact of satisfying basic psychological needs on work engagement in nurses,provide reference for improving nurses' work engagement. Methods The questionnaire survey was performed on 163 nurses who worked in three grade-A tertiary general hospitals in Zhengzhou City from August 2021 to March 2022 by the general information questionnaire,the basic psychological needs satisfaction scale and the Utrecht work engagement scale,and the data were analyzed. Results The total average score of work engagement in nurses was (53.84±14.02)points,the total average score of basic psychological needs satisfaction was (40.18±8.25)points,and there was a positive correlation between them(r=0.754,P<0.01). The basic psychological needs satisfaction,job satisfaction and status of children were the influencing factors of nurses' work engagement(all P<0.01). Conclusions The nurses' work engagement is at a low to medium level,and basic psychological needs satisfaction was at a low level. The nursing managers should pay attention to the basic psychological needs of nurses,and give them full understanding and support,optimize the work content of nurses to maximize their professional value,and further improve the level of work engagement.
