Analysis on epidemiological characteristics of injuries among primary and secondary school students in Guilin City from 2016-2020

Abstract: Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics of injuries among primary and secondary school students in Guilin City from 2016 to 2020,provide reference and basis for putting forward targeted and feasible intervention strategies. Methods From 2016 to 2020,the injury data of primary and secondary school students who were treated in the outpatient and emergency departments of sentinel hospitals for the first time due to injury in Guilin City were collected to analyze the epidemic situation and characteristics. Results In Guilin City,a total of 9 842 injuries were reported among primary and secondary school students aged 6-<19 years,including 6 674 injuries in boys and 3 168 injuries in girls,with a male-to-female ratio of 2.11 ∶ 1. The injuries mainly occurred in schools and public places,roads/streets and homes,accounting for 36.94%(3 636 cases),19.42%(1 911 cases) and 19.29%(1 899 cases),respectively. The main causes of injuries were fall,blunt force injury and knife/sharp force injury,accounting for 52.79%(5 196 cases),13.30%(1 309 cases) and 12.77%(1 257 cases),respectively. The top three injury sites were head,upper limb and lower limb,accounting for 33.58%(3 305 cases),26.29%(2 587 cases) and 25.75%(2 534 cases),respectively. There were statistically significant differences in the place,cause,activity,nature and location of injuries among primary and secondary school students of different age and gender(all P<0.05). Conclusion The occurrence of injuries among primary and secondary school students in Guilin City from 2016 to 2020 is influenced by a variety of factors,and injury prevention education should be carried out to reduce the occurrence of injuries to protect the health of students by addressing the different characteristics of injury occurrence among primary and secondary school students in Guilin City.
