Mediating effect of positive empathy between working environment perception and humanistic caring ability among ICU nurses

Abstract: Objective To explore the mediating effect of positive empathy between working environment perception and humanistic caring ability among nurses in intensive care unit(ICU),provide a theoretical basis for managers improve the management and training of ICU nurses,enhancing their level of human caring ability. Methods Totally 210 ICU nurses from two grade-A tertiary hospitals in Anhui province were selected by convenience sampling method as research objects from April to May 2022. They were investigated by the general information questionnaire,nurse humanistic care ability scale,nurse work environment perception scale,trait positive empathy scale,and the data were analyzed. Results The score of humanistic care ability in ICU nurses was(194.03±20.13)points,the score of working environment perception was(86.70±13.05)points,and the score of positive empathy was (27.75±4.60)points. The total score of humanistic care ability and scores of dimensions(except courage dimension) were positively correlated with total score and dimension scores of working environment perception and positive empathy. The positive empathy played a mediating role between working environment perception and human caring ability in ICU nurses,and the intermediary effect accounted for 30.1% of the total effect. Conclusions The hospital managers should pay attention to the impact of the environment and personal characteristics on ICU nurses. It is necessary to further improve the working environment of ICU nurses,enhance their humanistic care ability,cultivate their positive empathy quality,and improve the overall care effect of patients.
