Abstract: Objective To investigate the relationship between dementia knowledge, positive aspects of caregiving and sense of competence in dementia care staff, explore their training needs. Methods By the convenience sampling method,a total of 247 dementia caregivers in eight long-term care institutes in Guangxi were surveyed from October to December 2023. A questionnaire survey was conducted using the general information questionnaire, the dementia knowledge assessment scale(DKAS),the positive aspects of caregiving(PAC) and the sense of competence in dementia care staff(SCIDS),to analyze the relationship between dementia knowledge, the positive aspects of caregiving and the sense of competence in dementia care staff, and consult caregivers about their training needs. Results A total of 265 questionnaires were distributed and 247 valid questionnaires were recovered, with a validity rate of 93.21%. The dementia caregivers had a dementia knowledge score of (14.69±3.25)points,the positive aspects of caregiving score of (33.02±7.63)points,and the sense of competence in dementia care staff score of (45.49±8.99) points. The dementia knowledge was positively correlated with the positive aspects of caregiving and the sense of competence in dementia care staff(r=0.496,0.423,both P<0.01),while the positive aspects of caregiving was positively correlated with the sense of competence in dementia care staff(r=0.610,P<0.01). The positive aspects of caregiving partially mediated the relationship between dementia knowledge and the sense of competence in dementia care staff, accounting for 62.31%of the total effect. Conclusion The scores of dementia knowledge, the positive aspects of caregiving, and the sense of competence of dementia caregivers are all at the average level, and the positive aspects of caregiving as a mediating variable have an impact on the caregivers' caregiving competence, improving the positive aspects of dementia caregivers would help improve their caregiving competence.
