Abstract: Objective To investigate the levels of ruminative thinking and job burnout among surgical nurses in Hubei Province, analyze the correlation between ruminative thinking and job burnout, and provide a reference for developing targeted intervention measures. Methods Using a combination method of stratified sampling and convenience sampling,a survey was conducted from September to December 2023. The general demographic questionnaires, the rumination response scale(RRS) and Maslach burnout inventory general survey(MBI-GS) were administered to investigate 267 surgical nurses across four grade-A tertiary hospital in Hubei Province:those in the western, northern, central, and eastern regions. Results The scores for ruminative thinking and job burnout among surgical nurses were (41.58±13.19) and (68.07±17.90)points,respectively. The Pearson correlation analysis revealed the total score of ruminative thinking in nurses was significantly positively correlated with the total score of job burnout(P<0.01). The dimensions of symptom rumination, reflective pondering, and obsessive contemplation were all significantly positively correlated with the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization dimensions of burnout(all P<0.01). The dimensions of reflective pondering and obsessive contemplation were positively correlated with the reduced personal accomplishment dimension(P<0.05). The hierarchical regression analysis indicated that, after controlling for general demographic factors, ruminative thinking could explain 35.2% of the variance in job burnout. Conclusion The extent of ruminative thinking among surgical nurses in Hubei Province is closely associated with job burnout, and the nursing managers should monitor and regularly assess the psychological state of surgical nurses, appropriately allocate work tasks, and reduce the burden of high workloads,so as to prevent surgical nurses from being exposed to prolonged high-pressure and stressful work environments, thereby reducing the occurrence of job burnout.
