Abstract:

Objective To investigate the relationship between medical students' professional identity and learning burnout, and the role of career calling and learning engagement in this relationship. Methods In January 2024,a questionnaire survey was conducted on 1 259 medical students using the professional identity scale, the career calling scale, the learning burnout scale, and the learning engagement scale. PROCESS was used to test the mediating effect. Results The score of medical students' learning burnout was at a medium level[(3.11±0.56)points]. Professional identity, career calling and learning engagement were negatively correlated with learning burnout(all P<0.01). Professional identity could significantly negatively predict the level of learning burnout of medical students(β=-0.332,P<0.01). Career calling and learning engagement played a chain mediating role between medical students' professional identity and learning burnout, with a mediating effect value of -0.255,accounting for 77% of the total effect. Conclusion Professional identity can not only directly affect the level of learning burnout of medical students, but also indirectly affect learning burnout through the role of career calling and learning engagement.

Key words: Professional identity, Career calling, Learning engagement, Learning burnout, Medical students, Chain mediation
