Research progress on social capital and health of the elderly

Abstract: The population aging is a global social problem. The elderly,as a vulnerable group in society,account for a large proportion,and their health status is closely related to "healthy aging". The social capital is a key factor in creating personal health and well-being,and plays a key role in disease development and health promotion. From a new perspective of social capital,this paper focuses on the potential intangible resources of the elderly,reviews the definition,status,classification,assessment tools,mechanisms of social capital,mechanisms that affect health,and the impact on the physical health,healthy behavior,mental health,and healthy aging of the elderly,aiming to improve the attention of medical and public health personnel to social capital,and provide a reference for the development of social capital assessment tools and interventions to promote the health of the elderly.
