Abstract: Objective To explore whether the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) affect the sleep quality of college students, and examining whether stress plays a mediating role in it. Methods From February to May 2023,a survey was conducted on 306 college students in Guangzhou, using the adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder self rating scale,Pittsburgh sleep scale, and college student stress scale. Results The screening rates for attention deficit symptoms, hyperactivity and impulsivity symptoms,as well as comorbidities of ADHD,sleep disorders, and stress disorders among college students in Guangzhou were 25.91%,4.32%,14.95%,60.13%,and 17.61%,respectively. The number of children in the family affected the comorbidities of attention deficit and hyperactivity(t=2.49,P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed that ADHD symptoms, sleep quality, and stress were significantly positively correlated with each other(r=0.205-0.357,all P<0.01). Structural equation modeling showed that ADHD symptoms could indirectly predict sleep quality through stress(ADHD symptoms → stress → sleep quality),and stress played a completely mediating role in the impact of ADHD symptoms on sleep quality(β=0.168,P<0.01). Factor analysis further indicated that ADHD symptoms had the most significant impact on daytime dysfunction in sleep quality through stress(β=0.140,P<0.01). Conclusions The symptoms of ADHD in college students can affect their sleep quality through stress. ADHD symptoms in college students can increase their stress levels, then reducing their sleep quality.
